Established in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay and one of Scotland's great historic whisky houses. Yet age alone is not what sets Bowmore apart. The distillery remains deeply connected to traditional whisky making, retaining its own floor maltings and the legendary No.1 Vaults, where generations of exceptional Bowmore have matured beside the Atlantic.
This unique maritime environment, combined with Bowmore's carefully judged use of peat, creates a house style quite unlike the more powerfully smoky expressions for which Islay is often known. Four decades in exceptional oak
The Bowmore 40 Years Old 2023 spent forty years maturing in a carefully selected combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and sherry-seasoned European oak hogsheads. A significant proportion was given an extended finish in first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso sherry casks, building extraordinary depth and richness while preserving Bowmore's distinctive character.
Bottled at 45.1% ABV, the result is a beautifully mature single malt with a deep mahogany appearance and an exceptionally layered aromatic profile.
The nose opens with juicy papaya and passion fruit, complemented by rich cocoa and butterscotch. On the palate, the tropical character gives way to darker and more mature flavours of tobacco leaf, walnut cake and butterscotch, all intertwined with Bowmore's signature whisper of Islay peat smoke. The finish is long, rich and beautifully composed.
It is this balance that makes old Bowmore so compelling: after forty years in oak, the whisky has developed immense concentration and maturity without losing the elegant fruit and gentle smoke at the heart of the distillery's character.
