The Macallan 73 Years Old (2024) – The Red Collection (44.9%) sits in a category of its own: a whisky shaped by time on a scale most distilleries will never witness. Over seventy years of maturation is not simply “old”, it’s generational. It’s the quiet miracle of a cask that held its course through changing seasons, changing decades, and changing custodians, until the moment it was deemed worthy to bottle.
This release belongs to The Red Collection, The Macallan’s revered series reserved for its most mature, most scarce single malts. Think of it as a gallery of age and provenance: expressions chosen not for volume, but for significance, whiskies that exist in tiny numbers because there was never much to begin with, and far less that survives this long with grace intact. A 73-year-old bottling isn’t produced; it’s discovered.
And then there’s what makes The Macallan. The distillery’s identity has always been built around an uncompromising pursuit of character: a house style defined by depth, polish, and a luxurious mouthfeel, guided by a long-standing fixation on wood influence and maturation. In simple terms: Macallan doesn’t just make spirit, it engineers a profile, then protects it with relentless selection and patience.
73 years in the making
The Macallan Red Collection is an exquisite range of eight remarkable and rare single malt whiskies, shaped by the actions of our founder Alexander Reid and key characters in The Macallan’s history.
The Red Collection has been created from some of the world’s oldest and rarest casks which are the pinnacle of our portfolio. The distinctive red colour is inspired by the significance of red throughout our history, such as The Macallan's ‘Choice Old’ range, our much-loved older expression released over a century ago in 1903.
This expression embodies our unwavering commitment to uncompromised excellence, and our deep respect for time, tradition and craftsmanship.
From past to present
To celebrate the launch of The Macallan 73 Years Old, a new animated film and series of illustrations have been created in collaboration with renowned Spanish painter and artist, Javi Aznarez.
Javi Aznarez depicts the timeless craftsmanship, knowledge, and skills passed down through generations of The Macallan’s Whisky Makers. From Alexander Reid's first distillation in his Curiously Small Stills over two centuries ago to our present Whisky Mastery Team, we continue to honour our foundational production principles.
