Masseto 2023 – Tenuta dell’Ornellaia - available by the end of November.
One of Italy’s greatest wines, born from one extraordinary vineyard.
Masseto 2023 represents another remarkable chapter in the history of one of Italy’s most prestigious and sought-after wines. Produced on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, Masseto has achieved almost mythical status amongst collectors for its extraordinary interpretation of Merlot, combining immense concentration and power with remarkable elegance, freshness and finesse.
The 2023 vintage has already received exceptional international acclaim, including 99/100 points from Audrey Frick, alongside 98/100 from James Suckling and 98/100 from Jane Anson.
The extraordinary terroir of Masseto
The secret behind Masseto lies beneath the vineyard itself.
The Masseto hill contains exceptionally rare Pliocene blue clay soils, brought towards the surface by geological forces millions of years ago. These dense clays retain precious moisture and place a natural restraint on the vines, creating the conditions in which Merlot can develop extraordinary concentration, structure and complexity.
It was against conventional wisdom that Merlot was originally planted here. Yet from the earliest harvests, the unique personality of the vineyard became unmistakable.
The name Masseto itself pays tribute to this remarkable terroir, deriving from the rock-hard clusters of blue clay – known as massi – found across the vineyard.
Today, Masseto is regarded as one of the benchmark Merlots of the world and has become one of the most collectible names in Italian fine wine.
The exceptional 2023 vintage
The 2023 growing season demanded tremendous precision in the vineyard.
A mild winter was followed by abundant spring rainfall, replenishing vital water reserves ahead of a warm summer. Temperatures reached approximately 35°C without the most extreme peaks, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually and achieve excellent concentration.
Crucially, rainfall towards the end of August followed by cooler September nights helped preserve freshness and acidity while encouraging greater aromatic complexity.
The resulting Masseto 2023 is a wine of striking contrasts: power without heaviness, opulence balanced by precision and remarkable freshness.
Layers of dark and red fruit are joined by beautifully complex notes of Amarena cherry, dark chocolate, Mediterranean herbs, mint, lavender and mineral nuances. The palate is powerful yet controlled, with beautifully structured tannins and the distinctive mineral character that has become synonymous with the Masseto vineyard.
This is a Masseto built not simply for immediate admiration, but for decades of evolution in the cellar.
An icon of Italian fine wine
Masseto occupies a special place in the world of fine wine. Its reputation was not created through appellation or centuries of convention, but through the extraordinary character of one small vineyard and an uncompromising pursuit of quality.
From its distinctive blue-clay terroir to its meticulous vineyard selection and extraordinarily limited production, Masseto has become a true collector’s wine – frequently mentioned alongside the greatest wines of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa Valley.
Masseto 2023 captures exactly what has made this wine legendary: the richness of Merlot, the unmistakable character of the Tuscan coast and the extraordinary mineral power of the Masseto hill.
A magnificent addition to any serious Italian fine wine collection and a vintage with exceptional potential for long-term cellaring.
