The Balvenie 50 Years Old 2024 – The Fifty Collection First Edition – 52.3% – 1 of 125
An extraordinary 50-year-old single cask whisky. The first chapter of The Balvenie Fifty Collection. Limited to just 125 bottles worldwide.
The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition is one of the rarest and most significant releases ever created by this legendary Speyside distillery. Released in 2024 to mark five decades of exceptional whisky craftsmanship, this remarkable 50-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky forms the opening chapter of an extraordinary three-part collection.
At its heart lies a single exceptionally rare cask: Cask No. 8720, a European oak refill butt filled in 1973. After five decades of maturation at The Balvenie, the cask was personally selected by Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie for the First Edition of The Fifty Collection.
Bottled at 52.3% ABV and limited to only 125 individually presented bottles worldwide, The First Edition is an exceptionally scarce opportunity to own the whisky that began The Balvenie Fifty Collection.
The First Chapter of The Fifty Collection
What makes The First Edition particularly fascinating is its place at the very beginning of a trilogy.
The Balvenie created The Fifty Collection to celebrate the people, skills and craftsmanship that have shaped the distillery over the past half-century. The 1973 refill cask selected for this First Edition establishes a distinctive flavour thread that continues through the subsequent releases, connecting the three editions.
This makes The First Edition more than an extraordinarily old Balvenie. It is the foundation of the complete Fifty Collection and the beginning of a three-year story celebrating 50 years of craftsmanship.
Five Decades in a Single European Oak Cask
For an astonishing 50 years, this whisky matured in a European oak refill butt.
The long maturation has created remarkable depth while preserving the elegant, honeyed character for which The Balvenie is renowned.
The nose reveals deep fruit, cassis and candied apricot, complemented by delicate cedar and warming nutty spice. On the palate, layers of caramelised fruit and rich spice meet soft vanilla, followed by delicate ginger and a vibrant touch of citrus.
After half a century in oak, the whisky retains an extraordinary balance between maturity, complexity and the unmistakable character of The Balvenie.
The Balvenie – Five Rare Crafts
The Balvenie occupies a remarkable position within the world of Scotch whisky.
Located in Dufftown in the heart of Speyside, the distillery remains dedicated to what it calls its Five Rare Crafts – traditions that have largely disappeared from modern whisky production.
The Balvenie grows a proportion of its own barley, continues to operate traditional floor maltings and maintains both its own coppersmith and an on-site team of coopers. The fifth craft is the Malt Master, responsible for overseeing the maturation and creation of The Balvenie's whiskies.
These traditions connect generations of craftspeople and help explain why The Balvenie remains one of the most distinctive handcrafted names in Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
The Fifty Collection is ultimately a celebration of exactly this philosophy: whisky shaped not simply by time, but by the people and crafts that have protected it throughout those decades.
A Sculpture Created Around the Whisky
The presentation of The Balvenie Fifty First Edition is almost as extraordinary as the whisky itself.
Rather than a conventional wooden presentation box, The Balvenie commissioned specialist craft workshop Croglin in Cumbria to create an intricate sculptural presentation specifically for The Fifty Collection.
Its striking helix structure represents the interwoven nature of The Balvenie's craftsmanship and heritage. The wooden elements spiral around the bottle before opening to reveal the whisky at its centre.
Each presentation consists of more than 100 individual components, including an extraordinarily precise four-layer wooden helix manufactured to a tolerance of less than 0.1 millimetres.
At its heart sits a beautifully crafted 14-carat gold-plated brass display, creating a presentation that feels as much like a piece of contemporary craftsmanship as a whisky case.
The design is therefore not simply packaging. It is an extension of the philosophy behind The Fifty Collection: precision, wood, craftsmanship and generations of knowledge brought together around an exceptionally rare whisky.
Only 125 Bottles Worldwide
With just 125 bottles released worldwide, The Balvenie Fifty Collection First Edition represents an exceptional combination of age, provenance, craftsmanship and scarcity.
A 50-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single European oak cask. The first release in a landmark trilogy. An extraordinary handcrafted sculptural presentation. And an allocation of only 125 bottles for collectors around the world.
For the serious collector of The Balvenie and the world's rarest Scotch whiskies, The Fifty First Edition is not simply part of the collection – it is where the story begins.
